This early 20th-century briar pipe is shaped in the classic straight billiard form, with an upright cylindrical bowl and a straight stem stamped SELF CLEANER – MADE IN FRANCE, a marking used by French makers to promote improved airflow and reduced moisture during smoking. The briar shows the warm, smooth wear of long and honest use, giving the pipe a pleasing, well-handled surface. Set neatly into the base of the bowl is a functioning Stanhope micro-viewer, an uncommon and desirable feature in pipes of this era. When held to the light, the lens reveals five miniature photographic scenes of Bermuda: The main title is " BERMUDA" and the individual view are as follows: View from Windermere, The Cathedral, Bermuda, Bermudian Home, and Beach at Somerset—a charming early souvenir set produced in France.
The pipe shows age-appropriate wear consistent with long use.
