This figural Niagara Falls barrel made of satin spar is clean and in nice condition showing some signs of careful wear. The satin spar fob pendant is encircled by a 14k gold round wire that finishes with a loop bale that ends with a round gold cup. Such feldspar barrels were popular Niagara Falls tourist souvenirs and could be bought from 1880 through the 1920s. This barrel pendant measures 11/16" long, 11/16" wide with the ring included and weighs 3.9 grams. The stanhope peep inside the barrel shows four views of Niagara Falls. The view is titled SOUVENIR FROM NIAGARA FALLS in the center and MADE IN FRANCE is marked along the right side. This view has some crackle over its title but the separate views are still quite visible and can be seen and read.The individual views are titled as follows:

Satin Spar or feldspar is a close relative to selenite or gypsum. This mineral can be turned into many wonderful shapes that have a glimmer that is often mistakenly referred to a white tiger eye. Satin spar is also rarely found in colors other then white like pastel pink or green. The first known collectors of this mineral were the native Indians. They collected it for the medicinal attributes the mineral was said to have and traded it as far south as Mexico. In the late 1880s the mineral started being used to make souvenirs for tourist that came to the Niagara Falls region. These souvenir included hat pins, stick pins, brooches, watch fobs, pendants and were often times in the shape of a barrel, with a few exceptions.
