Included
in this group are some of the finest & rarest stanhope collectibles. There
are several varieties of match safes or vestas as well as the occasional
snuffbox. Next come cigarette & cheroot holders, often with nude pictures.
The pipes alone are a world by themselves. They vary from carved wooden
Indian heads containing a stanhope of Niagara Falls in the nose to take
apart bottle pipes, Swiss Chamoix horn pipes & Meerschaum pipes. The
Meerschaums are some of the most exquisitely worked. One particular
example is a carving of a cavalry officer mounting his steed. Detail shows
his sword, epaulettes, blanket & saddle. The Dagron stanhope is of the
Italian Army. Last but not least are the cigarette lighters which are
quite rare. Of the few specimens available, most are nickel plated brass
with the stanhope in the stem of the striking element. |
