This category is one of the biggest. as far as variety of objects, subject matter and materials used. There are many turned bone needle cases with screw tops and carved or drilled out decorations. Less common are the cases made of horn of those that resemble deer or goat hooves. In good condition the latter have actual hair on them. At times the needle case is attached to a tape measure. The stanhope is in the spindle that winds the tape. Some of the most interesting tape measures are the figural ones. Examples include a castle, a rolling pin and an iron. Some of the tapes are etched or painted with the name of a resort along with the appropriate picture. Thimble cases also come in a variety of shapes and sizes, e.g. a walnut or acorn. Moreover thimbles themselves can be found with stanhopes. They are most often brass and quite uncommon, thereby commanding high prices on the open market. Other sewing implements include lacing hooks, stilettos, and knitting needle covers.
